What is better than Chirashii Don? It is Chirashii Don with lots of uni (sea urchin) topping. The first time I had uni, it was in Hokkaido with Chicky family and Moo. It was one of the best food on Earth. It is so GOOOD it should be rated as one of the 7 wonders in the food world. I had the worst uni craving for sometime because I have been watching Tokyo Walker - TVB lifestyle programme. My craving was so bad I blatantly check out every Japanese eatery that I come upon to see if they serve uni. Luckily Nite's friends suggested that the Sydney Fish Market might have the uni that I craved though the quality might not be as good.
Nite being the bestest friend ever accompany me to the fish market for my uni. We bought 2 packs of Uni @ $13.00 per pack. Of course we also bought assorted other seafood products. Yes, the uni didn't exactly melt in my mouth and it was a bit fishy but who cares! It satisfied my uni craving. In retrospect, I think we had overdose of uni that day. Would have been nice eat with Japanese rice and salmon roe.
No I am not fish roe.

I don't know much about sea urchins except never, never to step on one when on the beach and also because Nite's habit of fact reading before blogging is starting to rub off on me, I am gonna share 5 facts that I read off the internet.
- The sea urchin flesh/roe that we eat is actually the gonad - reproductive part (testis/ovary) of the sea urchin. This is a disturbing fact to know and it's one of those time its best not to know too much.
- Sea urchin have 5 growing teeth that can eat through rock. That is more terror than shark.
- It is from the same family as starfish and sea cucumbers. Somehow I am not surprised.
- It eats algae, mussels, invertebrate and sea cucumber as food. Talk about infernal affairs.
- It is the staple food of sea otters. Sea otters have good taste as well as keeping the sea urchin population in check. Over population of sea urchins destroys the environment. Come to think of it, over population of human also destroys the environment.
